Ljundberg Promoted Back into Starting Lineup

Freddie Ljundberg has been bumped up to the starting lineup against Union Southern California after news that he will most likely play in Los Angeles this Sunday. The Saints now have an active Fire trio of Pappa, Castillo and Ljundberg. Who would have guessed that? "We are very pleased to see Ljundberg back in action and hope his abilities shine once again. This is good news for our club" said the Saints owner.

Saints Enjoy Positive Results in Friendly

Friendly
GATEWAY UNITED 4 PUEBLA FC 0
-
The Saints used the clubs bye week to strengthen its roster and hopefully put a positive spin on the remainder of the 2010 season. The friendly match against Puebla was indeed a positive for the club. One such example is Julian DeGuzman adding to the scoreline. The Canadian has been struggling all season and perhaps this will give him a taste to do more in the future. Gateway United also made more roster moves this weekend in preparation for its match against Union Southern California.

Saints Staying Within a Certain Budget

PRESS RELEASE
-
It's the stretch run of the 2010 BSL season and although the results have not been kind to Gateway United the desire to win will always be in the clubs montra. The league's trading deadline is drawing near and at the current moment there does not seem to be and trades in the pipeline for our club. The transfer market did bring Castillo to the Saints, but other transfer players have chosen to play elsewhere. "We simply cannot go overboard on trying to obtain players like Fernandez. The price for his talent was just too high. With the club sitting in 7th place you have to start think about 2011 even though you still want to win today." said the Saints owner.
-
The desire to win today saw the club bring a few fresh faces to Gateway United. Kheli Dube was picked up from Burud Town and Will Johnson was picked up from Capital District. Neither are the impact players that the Saints were trying to obtain, but they will be put into play. Gateway United will continue to look for talent, but will continue to protect its current core roster players.

Facts Tell the Whole Story

MONARCHS 2 SAINTS 1

In no way is Gateway United making excuses, but it has been a constant series of bad karma this season. In this weeks match, Chris Pontius had to play 35 minutes with a broken bone after his on the field collision in the 6th minute. This obviously affected his performance and will likely have to be dropped from the roster. This is just a series of setbacks affecting the Saints this season. Jeff Cunningham was the best player for the club last season and is now riding the bench most of the games. Ljundberg was once the man and is now a disappointment. These are not excuses, just the facts.

Nery Signs With the Saints

PRESS RELEASE

Welcome to St. Louis Nery Castillo. Gateway United searched high and low to be the first to grab him. The 26 year old midfielder may have his issues off the field but he has talent and will be a welcomed addition to the club. Castillo played for the Mexican National Team during the World Cup qualifiers but did not join the team in South Africa.

"We are pleased that he chose the right team in St. Louis and will be wearing green in the BSL" said the Saints owner.

Match Build Up: Game 14

The rival Monarchs arrive this week to play. While all the buzz is about Henry, he will be no where near the pitch to help out Montgomery County. The Saints are actually hoping that the Fredy Ljundberg rumors are true and that he will be moving to the RedBulls to play with his former Arsenal teammate. Ljundberg has done nothing for the Saints this year and the change could be good. Ofcourse, for now it is just a rumor and rumors do not win BSL games.

REPORTER: Do you still look forward to playing Montgomery?
GATEWAY UTD: Yes, you never forget a playoff game loss.
REPORTER: More ties than wins this season. Comments?
GATEWAY UTD: You always would like to get the win but these ties have allowed us to stay in contention still. A win this week would do wonders.

Another Bitter Sweet Draw

SAINTS 2 STAGS 2

The Saints keep hanging around to fight another day. The Saints recent 2-2 draw against Burud Town was bitter sweet. The roster is not at full strength and taking a point is better than nothing at all. Landon Donovan got some time off from all the World Cup traveling he's done. Fredy Ljundberg sat out but is expected to only be out for 1 week. Jeff Cunningham continues to come off the bench in Dallas and this looks to be his new roll on the team.

Its the 5th draw this season is 1 shy of the league record. The question is will the wins eventually come or is this as good as it gets for Gateway United this year?

Saints acquire Ristic

PRESS RELEASE

Gateway United has just acquired Bratislov Ristic. The Serbian Midfielder is expected to play in a few weeks and could be a much needed boost to the club. Even though he is still un-signed by the Fire, the Saints were granted permission to add Ristic to the roster because he was placed on the Fire's SuperLiga roster.

Match Build Up: Game 13

The Saints come into this match with a 3-5-4 record and trailing by 7 points for the last playoff ranking. From a mathematical stance, Gateway United still has a chance.

REPORTER: Is the season still salvagable?
GATEWAY UTD: Yes, but we have to start winning.
REPORTER: What do you expect from Burud Town?
GATEWAY UTD: Not sure. Burud Town is a tough club to figure out.

Still No Answer for the Gunners or the Season

GUNNERS 5 SAINTS 2
-
There is definitely more questions than answers surrounding Gateway United these days. Who's staying, who's going. Who deserves playing time and who doesn't. This week's game against the hated Gunners did little to provide any relief. Once the first whistle blew the Saints back line gave up a whole slew of points to the Gunners forcing the Saints to play catch up the whole match. Frustration's further mounted when Julian de Guzman was ejected from the match. "De Guzman is already on thin ice with his total lack of play these days and this was just a slap in the face" The one player that has shown steady play as of late and is proving his merit in the starting lineup is Danny Mwanga. "He's just keep's scoring and we need that right now". Landon Donovan's return was a welcomed site but even he can't ignore the on and off field issues surrounding this club. The end result was a completely overmatched Saints squad losing again to the CD Gunners. "Maybe one day we'll figure out a way to defeat the Gunners. Right now we need to focus on how to salvage our season"

Thursday, July 01, 2010

Match Build Up: Game 12

With so much drama going on behind the scenes in the Gateway United training camp there is still a match to be played against the nemesis CD Gunners. Will Landon Donovan be leaving for Manchester City? What does the future hold for Jeff Cunningham? The fact is the Saints really don't need this right now as the club is chasing so many clubs in the BSL.
REPORTER: The Saints sit with 13 points in the BSL table and 1 point in the early Majors Cup table. How big is this next match?
GATEWAY UNITED: All matches against the Gunners are big. They aren't running a dog and pony show over there.
REPORTER: Is this a must win?
GATEWAY UNITED: I'll say this, a win this week would really help our chances. Someone between Union SC and Burud Town will lose this week and if the Gunners go down then all of a sudden things get real tight.
